Healing Has Layers (Just Like Ogres and Onions)
If you've ever finished a big piece of inner work, taken a deep breath, and thought, "Finally. I'm done," only to have something new bubble up a week later, this one's for you.
First, let me reassure you: nothing is wrong with you. You didn't do it wrong. You didn't "un-heal." You simply met the next layer.
Ogres, onions, and you
A certain green, swamp-dwelling movie hero once explained that ogres have layers, just like onions. He was talking about personality, but honestly? He could have been talking about healing.
When you peel back one layer, you don't find a space. You find another layer. Sometimes it's a softer version of what you just worked through. Sometimes it's something completely unexpected that was hiding underneath all along. And yes, just like with onions, there may be some tears involved. That's allowed and to be expected.
This is completely normal
We live in a world that loves a finish line. Lose the weight, get the promotion, check the box. So it's natural to want healing to work the same way: do the work, earn the certificate, frame it, hang it on the wall. Officially Healed, est. 2026.
But healing, like life, is a journey, not a destination. There is no final exam, and nobody is grading you. When another layer shows up, it isn't a sign that you failed or didn’t complete the assignment. It's a sign that you're ready for the next step. Your spirit tends to hand you what you can now hold, and the fact that something new is surfacing means you've built the strength and safety to look at it.
That is something to be proud of, even if it doesn't feel very glamorous.
Every layer changes the view
Here's the beautiful part. When we heal, we grow. And when we grow, we see things differently.
Think about climbing a hill. Each time you stop to rest, the view is a little wider than it was before. The path behind you looks different from up here. Experiences that once felt like proof that you were broken start to look like teachers. People you couldn't understand become a little easier to have compassion for. And maybe most importantly, you start to see yourself in a gentler, kinder light.
Healing doesn't just help us move on. It invites us to go deeper: to understand what really affects us, why it lands the way it does, and how we can process it with more grace than we could before. Each layer gives you a new perspective to bring to the next one.
Closing one chapter, opening the next
So if you're standing at the edge of a new layer right now, take a breath. You're not starting over. You're starting from here, with everything you've learned so far.
We close one chapter, and we begin a new one. That's not a setback; that's the story continuing.
There is always something to heal. And thank goodness for that, because it also means there is always room to grow, always more light to let in, and always more of your true self waiting to be discovered.
Be patient with your layers. Be gentle with your onion. You're doing better than you think.
